Water Immersion VS. Humus: What Is The Best Way To Germinate Cannabis Seeds?

Germination is the process when a new plant begins to grow from the seed. This process is also known as “popping.” And this is also the first step in starting your cannabis garden.

You can buy cannabis seeds from many sources and the quality of the seed may not be the same in quality. Online seed banks are usually the best option for you to choose the best seeds for quality and genetic diversity.

When buying seeds, choose darker brown seeds with light accents and a firm feel. Seeds that seem fresh and green are those that have not yet reached full maturity.

The two most common ways to germinate cannabis seeds are to soak in water and use humus soil. Each method has different advantages and disadvantages. Let’s compare these two methods to choose the best way to germinate cannabis seeds.

#1 Water Immersion

This is the most economical and fastest method to germinate seeds. It is also the most common method used by many to make cannabis seeds germinate.

With this method you don’t need to invest too much, all you need is a plastic cup and clean water. You should use purified bottled water to avoid using polluted water sources that affect the seed.

All you need to do is put the seeds in a glass of pure water. Then put it in the dark for about 36-72h. You should note that do not let any light into the glass of water as it will affect the quality of germination of the seed.

The ideal pH for water is 6.0 and you should change it every day to avoid mold and moss problems.

This method makes seeds germinate quickly and is very economical. However, it cannot cause inferior seeds to germinate.

#2 Humus

This method can overcome the disadvantages of the method of soaking seeds in water. It can cause even inferior seeds to germinate, but it takes more time.

With this method, you use humus or clean soil to place in small, perforated plastic cups at the bottom and spray water (pH about 6.5).

Soil should be clean, preferably pre-packaged soil, pasteurized to prevent bacteria, germs, and mold from attacking your cannabis plant as it grows into a tree.

Then, place it under sunlight (preferably next to a window) or use white / blue light bulbs to stimulate seed germination.

This is a better method because it ensures that almost all cannabis seeds can germinate. However it takes from 1-10 days to do that.
